CAPRICORN| SATURN - mythology, our visual & sonic approach
The mythology surrounding this star constellation date back over 2000 years B.C. In summary, there are two dominant myths explaining the constellation of the sea-goat. One remembering the God Pan, who helped scare the Titans away and eventually escaped himself by turning his lower body into a fish tail and jumping into the Nile. The second tale is about Zeus, who was raised by a goat and nymphs while he was hidden from his Titan father Kronos who vowed to eat all his children in order to not be defeated by them. To honour the creatures who protected him as an infant, Zeus placed the sea-goat as stars in the night sky after he had won the war against the Titans and killed his father.

Saturn - Kronos in Greek Mythology - was the leader of the Titans, son of Uranus (the sky) and Gaia (the earth). He castrated and deposed his father, to be later overthrown by his own son, Zeus, who was adapted as Jupiter in Roman mythology. Kronos, the god of agriculture, founder of civilizations and of social order and conformity, was associated with the Golden Age and later became the God of Time. Chaldean astrologers named him Lord of the Death, as he represented the sun at its lowest and the midwinter solstice. In ancient Turkey Saturn’s worship included wearing black clothes and burning candles, which were made of incense, opium, goat’s fat and urine. As Saturn embodied the midwinter time, the festivals became the Roman Saturnalia, which later was adopted as Christmas. At Saturn’s festival death was celebrated as well as the rebirth of the sun. Saturn gave his name to Saturday, the sabbath of the week, before the coming of the new sun on Sunday. To the ancients, who did not know of Uranus, Neptune & Pluto, Saturn was the highest planet in the hierarchy of planets and thus associated with immortality and longevity. Saturn's energy is that of the ruler, of the one in charge, of law and order, boundaries, and all things inevitable, death, taxes, fate, evolution. Saturn rules bones and teeth, governs discipline and long-term goals. Saturn takes 29.5 years to orbit the sun, spending about 2.46 years in each sign of the zodiac. Saturn Return classically marks the end of the twenties & beginning of the thirties in a human life. Usually, this time marks the final phase of becoming an adult, may it be through marriage or child birth or entering the professional realms of a vocation. Its symbol, the mystical sea-goat indicates both layers of saturnine energy: the worldly, enduring and ascetic goat as well as a mystical creature of the ocean, attuned to depths unfathomable and unknown. The word capricious. Wisdom. The Devil in Tarot. Traditionally, Saturn was the ruler of Aquarius, too. Saturn plants thrive in adversity and may grow where we don't expect or want them. They are often dark in colour with blue or purple flowers, like Solomon’s Seal (note the connection to a wise king & judge), Witch Hazel, Mandrake, Enchanter’s Nightshade. Associated metal is lead, Saturn minerals tend to be heavy and dark, like Tourmaline and Onyx.

Zodiac Sounds create images, still and moving, which are leaning on these themes and archetypes. Exploring, connecting & conveying them. Our sonic ventures through the Zodiac Signs begin with assigning each to its individual tone. Doing this, we do not follow the traditional method, which is linear, starting with Aries, the first Zodiac Sign, and associating it with C, the first tone of the scale. That would mean to combine D/Taurus, E/Gemini and so forth. Regarding harmony and triad though, it makes much more sense for us, to take a new, our own, approach. Our compositions are based on the Pythagorean circle of fifths and the astrological elements Fire, Earth, Water & Air.

The keynotes for each element's Zodiac Signs are related to each other via 120° angles. An Earth Sign triangle (Taurus-A/Virgo-E/Capricorn-B), a Water triangle, a Fire triangle, the Air triangle. The melodies are composed of recurring motifs which derive from every Zodiac Sign's constellation of stars in the night sky. Via these motifs we improvise and use a third tool, our perception, which conducts pace & rhythm of the music. In doing so, we totally trust and follow our hearts, minds and bodies, which are powered and driven by the formidable & unfathomable universe.
